CHAPTER NINETEEN

I was drunk. Very, very drunk. And that was because I took one look at the pile of letters Johnny had written me when I got back to Sarah’s place and knew there was no way I would be able to read them without some liquid courage.

Somehow, those few glasses of wine I stole from Sarah’s bottle of Cabernet led me to a small dive bar named, Joanne’s Tavern, in the middle of downtown Pebble Brook Falls. It was a Tuesday night, so the only people in the place were me, the bartender, and a few locals who were quietly nursing their drinks down the bar from me.

I took another swig of my rum and coke before I finally had the nerve to untie the burlap string and open the first envelope at the top of the stack.

I can do this, I said to myself. Or at least I thought I said it to myself until I realized the bartender had shifted his gaze to me and a quizzical brow raised. Ignoring him, I slipped the piece of paper from the envelope and gently opened it with shaky hands.

Tears immediately welled in my eyes as I saw Johnny’s chicken scratch handwriting sprawled across the page.

Dear Willow,

I don’t even know where to begin, but I guess the best place to start is by saying I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I left you and I’m even more sorry that I didn’t fully explain why. The truth is that joining the military felt like the only path I had to keep myself from turning into my parents. There was no money for me to go to college and if I tried to get a low-level job in Pebble Brook Falls, I would have hated it. Working in the grocery store or the ice cream parlor just isn’t me and you know that. I want to make something of myself and I think the military will help me do that. Although, my sergeant is already busting my balls. I’ve never been good at making my bed, but here they force me to do it every single morning. It’s good for me though. The structure keeps me in line and I’ve already opened a savings account so I can pay for you to come visit me in Washington soon. I think you’d love the west coast. There’s no fields like our special place back home, but the trees here are huge! Anyways, I hope you can forgive me, Willow. I miss you. The softness of your skin and the bright blue of your eyes. I miss everything about you and I can’t wait to see you again.

Love,

Johnny
